Question

I'm planning my upgrade to V6R1 and I would like information about compatibility with BCD products.

Answer

The upgrade to V6R1 (or 6.1, as it is also called) is not like most regular System i OS upgrades. While there is always a risk of incompatibilities surfacing as a result of an OS upgrade, in this case it is a certainty as you r programs will be converted. Do not assume that any of our software products will run at V6R1, unless you are at the versions  described below.

These are the earliest versions of our software that will restore and run at V6R1 (Note that a number of these products also use Exodus, our communication middleware. See the additional information below for issues related to Exodus and Port 2015):
  • ProGen 9.5
  • WebSmart ILE 7.1 and Clover 1.5
  • WebSmart PHP 2.0
  • Catapult 6.19
  • Nexus 3.36 GA
  • Presto 1.2
  • File-Flash Plus  4.50
  • Docu-Mint 6.5
  • Spool-Explorer 4.5
  • DbGen 2.50
Please note that these are the EARLIEST versions that will run at V6R1. If you are at a later release of any of the products above, they will work too. You can download the most current versions of our software from myBC Dsoftware.com or the public download page.

Beyond the conversion issues described by IBM, you should also be aware that new versions of the OS often introduce subtle changes to APIs or other interfaces which can create new problems in unexpected areas. While a large numbe of our customers have already completed this upgrade, it's always possible that you may have some unique situation that merits additional attention. Please get in touch if you have any questions or difficulties.

Special Note Regarding Products that Use Exodus
At V6R1 and higher, IBM has begun using port 2015. As you may know, port 2015 was the default connection port for Exodus connections, which is relevant to Spool-Explorer/400, Catapult, WebSmart and Presto. If you have a previous version of our software installed on your systems, they will likely use port 2015, while at V6R1 we are recommending port 7015 as a default. You can find additional information in KB Article 7355.

Special Note to Current WebSmart and Clover Developers
Any WebSmart or Clover programs that were last compiled with an earlier version than version 7 of WebSmart will need to be regenerated and recompiled to bind them to the new WebSmart service program. We recommend installing the latest version of WebSmart and regenerating and recompiuling your programs prior to upgrading to V6R1.

Running the IBM command ANZOBJCVN over a WebSmart program can leave you with the mistaken impression that it will run correctly on V6R1. This is not necessarily the case. Service programs in XL_WEBSPT that are referenced by your program must also be able to be converted, and prior to WebSmart version 7.0, this is not generally be the case.

If you have any doubts or questions, please call Technical Support (before upgrading!).
