How to see the XML data set that SmartChart uses to build a graph

Product: SmartCharts Type: Troubleshooting

This is a useful technique for debugging SmartCharts. By looking at the XML data sets and attributes that SmartChart uses to build a graph, we can make sure that the output value is what you desired. You can learn more about XML on this Wikipedia page.

To see the data uses by SmartCharts

  1. In the RunChart segment, copy the value inside setXMLUrl() function and paste it right underneath the body tag.
    <field name=pgmf_qpgmnam>?task=run_report&param1=<field name=value1>&param2=<field name=value2>
This will allows us to see the parameters pass to functions that retrieved data for SmartCharts.
  2. Generate and launch your program.
  3. The program name and the parameters passed to SmartChart will be visible at the top of your webpage.
  4. Copy and paste this string to the end of the url in your web browser so it looks something like this:
This will navigate us directly to the source code that SmartChart use to plot. The page will look blank since your web browser can't interpret the SmartChart data, however the source code for the graph are in this page.

  5. Use the browser's developer tool to view the source code of the page. The source code should contain elements <chart> and <set>. From there, you can see the values and attribute you set in WebSmart or Clover.
