After deploying my Smartframe solution to my development machine my shortcut to my development version of my Smartframe (and related solution files) no longer works.

Product: Newlook Type: Troubleshooting

After deploying my Smartframe solution to my development machine my shortcut to my development version of my Smartframe (and related solution files) no longer works.

Background

Windows will only allow for one instance of the Newlook ActiveX control to be registered at any given time. The last installation will typically overwrite the registration of your previous configuration.

Resolution

It is technically possibly to have multiple installations and have the Smartframe launch from the desired installation however this will require you to explicitly define the install folder that the Newlook ActiveX control will look for it's program and solution files. This is typically a matter of specifying the correct newlookDIR parameter within the NLU file that your Smartframe references...the reference to the NLU file is controlled by the updatefile parameter within the Smartframe files.

If you correctly define the NewlookDIR parameter within your NLU file and reference that NLU file it is possible to have multiple Newlook installations on a specific machine however you will need to be mindful that all versions of Newlook installed are the same version OR the last installation is the newest of all installations. An older version of the Newlook ActiveX control, say version 9.0.1 can not launch Newlook 10.6 for example.

If you do not have correctly configured newlookDIR parameters within your NLU files referenced by your Smartframe's updatefile parameter (or you do not have control of what may be installed on the user's machine) then it would be best to avoid installing multiple instances, including onto your own development machine.

If you wish to address an instance where an installation has broken your development environment Smartframe files then the following steps can address this situation :

1) Download nlclean utility from :
    ftp://ftp.looksoftware.com/distributor/tools/nlclean.exe

2) Making sure no browser windows or error dialogs are open run nlclean and answer Y to all prompts. This will clean any Newlook registry keys.

3) Perform re-install (repair install) of your developer software into the same directory as it was previously installed.
